Draft: APS Ethical guidelines for psychological practice with diverse sexualities, trans and gender diverse, and/or intersex characteristics

The latest draft is dated 11 October 2020.

Historically, and unfortunately today, there is still widespread societal lack of scientific understanding as well as ideological issues that contribute to the significant challenges of these heterogeneous populations.

These guidelines are written for APS members – from students to experienced practitioners – with a focus on abroad macro-level level ethical guidance rather than a comprehensive practice manual with specific instructions. It is vital that not all professionals can assume to understand the heterogeneous experience of generational marginalisation and personal experience of people with diverse sexualities, people of trans and genders diverse and people with inherent variations in sex characteristics and the intersectionality issues that often exist without lived-in experience/active involvement with relevant communities.

We have appreciated the specific feedback received from: P.D., B.H., S.P., K.S., D.S., T.S., J.T., I.W. as well as on behalf of organisations: ACON, Brave Network, Equality Australia, Intersex Human Rights Australia, Intersex Peer Support Australia, National LGBTI HealthAlliance, Queerspace, Rainbow Health Victoria, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Change Efforts (SOGICE) Survivors, Trans Health Australia, and the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Communities.

After broad consultations, the APS interest Group committee submitted our final draft to the APS National Office on 12 October 2020. It will go to an APS team of policy writers and legal advisors for further editing which may involve some further discussions with the Committee. Then it will be submitted to the APS Board of Directors for discussion, approval, and publication. The exact timeline of this process is unknown but is expected to take around 3 months.
